At Domus we believe that “home” is more than just the place where you sleep at night, it is also the community in which you live, and the support and sense of connection which it provides. Therefore, we try to give back to the Greater Halifax community in any way we can, so that everyone can feel at home here. On this page you will find information about some of the many ways in which we do this – from the initiatives and organizations that we support, to some of the amazing things that the members of our team do to make a difference. You might also find a photo or an article from our vaults, past or present. The idea is to give you a sense of who we are, what we do, and how much we value the community in which we work, live and play.

We are excited to announce that our newly re-branded charitable fund, Bright Futures Fund (BFF), has partnered with Ronald McDonald House Atlantic. We are pleased to be making a contribution to their capital campaign – details to follow soon! Ronald McDonald House Atlantic provides support and lodging to families from all over Atlantic Canada whose children are being treated at the IWK Heath Centre.

When Sandy Rutledge and Gail Morris started Domus Realty over 30 years ago, they were looking to create more than a brokerage, they were striving to build a community.

 

At the time, larger brokerages were the norm and the turnover of agents made building an engaged team difficult and often frustrating.  Unable to find a corporate culture that fostered the growth and comradery they were striving for, they decided to create it instead.

With much uncertainty and concern in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, please be assured that we are committed to the health and well-being of our clients, employees, and the general public.  We are keeping up to date on the latest recommendations from health officials and monitoring the situation closely.  We are temporarily refraining from holding open houses, and we are being extra vigilant where our office cleaning is concerned, taking care to wipe down surfaces daily with disinfectant.

Born and raised in rural Nova Scotia, Anne has lived in multiple communities within the province but has called North End Halifax home for nearly 20 years. A graduate of NSCAD University, Anne honed her business and community leadership skills as a professional potter. Through craft she recognized the value of detail, skill and professionalism. Her creative approach to marketing and sales will ensure your home gets the results it deserves.

The relationship between Phoenix Youth Programs and Domus Realty goes all the way back to the beginning of both organizations. Since we both recently turned 30, we decided the best way to honor this relationship was to make a donation. We have great respect for the work that Phoenix Youth does in the community. If you aren't famililar with them, you should definitely click here for more information.  Yesterday we were very pleased to present them with a cheque. They didn't have far to travel - their office is right above ours!

This summer we were pleased to present 3 cheques for $5000, one to each of the following organziations: HomeBridge Youth Society, Adsum House, and Welcome Housing & Support Services. Each group received funding to assist with projects they operate to help the city's homeless. We are so thankful for all the work they do! We are pleased to announce that yesterday we presented cheques totalling $18,000 to this year's selected recipients of our A Home for Everyone fund. Cheques were presented to the following organziations/projects:

Shelter Nova Scotia - to assist with painting to finish a renovation at their Metro Turning Point Shelter. Linda Wilson was here to accept on their behalf.

On Saturday, September 24, 2016, the women of Domus Realty participated in Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia's Women Build 2016.  As we are strong supporters of the fight to end homelessness, this event was very inspirational for us. In addition to fundraising, this day involved learning more about Habitat for Humanity's work in the community, and it enabled us to meet one of the families we were helping.  It was a great team-building exercise and we would encourage other groups to get out and help as well. Truly a great experience.

Well, Spring came late this year, but when it arrived it brought a flurry of activity with it! We have been so busy the past few months that we are bit late sharing some exciting news - after a lot of hard work, Dawn Dauphinee received her FRI designation from the Real Estate Institute of Canada! We applaud and recognize the immense dedication of those organizations and programs currently working to reduce the impact of homelessness in our community. The Domus Realty "A Home for Everyone" fund will be accepting applications until April 30, 2015 for the next grant. In particular, we are looking for programs or upstart charities with fresh ideas and/or innovation approaches. If this sounds like your organization, we look forward to receiving an application for consideration.

Each year we invite local organizations which are working to assist the homeless in our community to apply for funding from our A Home for Everyone initiative. The money in the fund comes directly from our sales agents who contribute a set amount from their commissions. After carefully reviewing all applications, a volunteer panel made up of community members decides who will receive the funds each year. This year we were pleased to give to the Salvation Army, Shelter Nova Scotia, and The Hospice Society of Greater Halifax. Below are some photos from the cheque presentation.

We are very excited to announce that we have chosen not one, not two, but THREE very worthy projects to receive funding this year from our A Home for Everyone fund. Last week we presented cheques to Phoenix House, Alice Housing, and Morris House (Metro Non-Profit Housing) totaling $29,000. As mentioned in previous posts, the money in our fund comes entirely from our agents, who donate a portion of their commissions. A volunteer panel made up of clients and community members reviews all applications received and decides where the funds will be allocated.

Both Sandy Rutledge and Jarrett Murphy from our office are participating in the Bluenose Marathon Scotiabank Charity Challenge on May 19, 2013 to raise money for Symphony Nova Scotia. Sandy will run the half-marathon, and Jarrett will do the 10K.  If you would like to support Symphony Nova Scotia by sponsoring either of our runners, you can click here.

Spring is almost here, can you believe it? We would like to take this time to remind everyone that applications for funding from the A Home for Everyone initiative is quickly approaching. If you haven’t heard about this initiative, you can get full details by clicking here.  Essentially, all of our agents contribute a portion of their income to a fund, and organizations working towards ending homelessness in the HRM can apply for a donation from the fund. A volunteer panel from the community reviews the applications and chooses a recipient.
