At Domus we believe that “home” is more than just the place where you sleep at night, it is also the community in which you live, and the support and sense of connection which it provides. Therefore, we try to give back to the Greater Halifax community in any way we can, so that everyone can feel at home here. On this page you will find information about some of the many ways in which we do this – from the initiatives and organizations that we support, to some of the amazing things that the members of our team do to make a difference. You might also find a photo or an article from our vaults, past or present. The idea is to give you a sense of who we are, what we do, and how much we value the community in which we work, live and play.
Congratulations Meghan!!

On May 10th, 2012, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Nova Scotia Chapter will be holding its annual Maritime Philanthropy Awards. We are very proud to share with you that one of our agents has been nominated for the 2012 awards. Meghan Laing, along with her co-organizer, Nancy Reagan, has been nominated in the category “Outstanding Volunteer Fundraising Group” for her work on the “Fight for Change” event, which raised $80,000 for the homeless in the region. (For more on this, see the blog post below titled “Taking a Swing at Homelessness”.)

Merriam Webster defines philanthropy as “goodwill to fellow members of the human race; especially: active effort to promote human welfare.”   Meghan’s goodwill and commitment to the community is unquestionable, and we are very pleased that her good works are being recognized in this way.

Congratulations Meghan!

Beer and Beethoven!

Want to have a fun night out while supporting the arts? Why not join Symphony Nova Scotia for its annual end-of season celebration, Beer and Beethoven? It’s a chance to enjoy a performance by Nova Scotia’s own, world-class orchestra, in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.  There will be special guests, a 50/50 draw, a fun photo booth provided by CBC, and much more.

Gail Morris and Jarrett Murphy of Domus sit on the committee for this event. Gail also sits on the Board of Directors for Symphony Nova Scotia. We believe in the importance of supporting the local arts community. If you feel the same, come out and join the fun on April 27th or 28th.

Drop Zone 2011

In September 2011 our Office Administrator, Kelly Hamilton, represented us in Easter Seals Nova Scotia’s annual Drop Zone campaign, rappelling down the MacDonald Bridge from 330 feet above Halifax Harbour. It was a beautiful, hot September day and 52 participants climbed up the inside tower of the bridge and rappelled to the pedestrian level below. Kelly also participated in this event in 2006, rappelling 23 storeys down 1801 Hollis Street. Easter Seals raises money and runs programs to assist children, teens and adults and with physical disabilites. Visit their website to learn more: www.easterseals.ns.ca

Home prices to see ‘healthy’ rise | The Chronicle Herald

Ship to Shore…

Everyone is wondering how the shipbuilding contract is going to affect the housing market in Halifax. The Chronicle Herald published this article yesterday, featuring an expert’s opinion on when we can expect to see things pick up:

Taking a swing at homelessness….
On December 1, 2011, an amazing group of local women came together for a cause – to fight homelessness. Literally. After months of planning, these women put on a charity boxing event which raised $80,000 for Shelter Nova Scotia, an organization which provides funding for several local shelters. Conceived and co-chaired by our own Meghan Laing, a Board member at Shelter Nova Scotia, Fight for Change featured ten local women facing off against one another in the ring after completing a gruelling training regime with professional boxers. It was an entertaining night for a great cause, and we couldn’t be more proud of Meghan for all of her hard work. You can learn more about the event on the Fight for Change Facebook page.

A Home for Everyone

“Domus” is the Latin word for “home”, and we are in the business of finding homes for people, so addressing the issue of homelessness is especially important to us.

In 2011 Domus Realty presented the first grant from its “A Home for Everyone” fund, in excess of $20,000, to Laing House. Started in 2009, the fund is made up entirely of donations from our agents, who contribute a set amount from each of their commissions. Once a year the initiative will accept applications from registered charities who are working towards the goal of ending homelessness in the HRM. A volunteer panel of community members from outside the company decides who will receive the grant, based on the merits of the proposals received. The deadline for this year’s submissions is April 30, 2012. Please visit the “A Home for Everyone” page on our website to learn more, or to submit an application on behalf of your organization.
